Kinesio tape was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase 25 years ago. Kinesio Tape is made of stretchable material so as not to restrict movement as normal bandage will do.

What does Kinesio tape do?

  1. Kinesio tape is placed over muscles, to minimize pain and inflammation.

    • A. The tape aids in proper blood flow and lymphatic drainage. As you move, the tape, skin and connective tissue (or fascia) over the muscle or tendon also move, and this creates space for lymphatic fluid to flow and cleanse the inflamed tissue.
    • B. Because the athlete is aware of extra support, the athlete becomes less worried about the area, and this allows for more natural movement of the area.
  2. With the muscle supported, the athlete will find an increased proprioceptive(where your brain thinks your limb is in its surroundings) awareness of the area which will improve the correct functioning of a particular muscle.
  3. The tape can also be used to stretch certain mechanisms back into their normal position. People have reported relief of shoulder, back, calf, plantar fasciitis and knee injuries.

The tape can last for three to five days, however time should be given for the skin to recover before reapplying.

Kinesio has almost unlimited potential to aid in rehabilitation and assist in avoiding muscle injuries.

PLEASE NOTE: The tape on its own will not make a major difference with rehabilitation. Combined with physiotherapy and/or massage therapy athletes should see real results and prevent the reoccurrence of injuries.
